When I was twenty-one, finishing my BA Illustration degree at the University of Westminster, I decided to create Narnia in a small boiler cupboard I found in a studio. I painted the entire thing, made a life-size wardrobe to fit over the door frame (of course with furs and wellies to push past). I used shed roofing and insulation material to make a path and snow. I made interactive models of Mr. Tumnus and the beavers house. I made a life-size White Witch puppet who sat in her icy domain. The crowning glory was the bronze Aslan mask I sculpted out of clay and cast in bronze resin, who welcomed guests into the space and provided a magical, golden glow.

Private view guests entered Narnia with their beers (well, those who found it) and then never left! The room was left untouched for many years…a little bit of hidden magic and joy.

  • This way to Narnia...
  • Just a cupboard in the corner...or is it?
  • The panels of the wardrobe, made from linocuts I illustrated.
  • A close up of the panels of the wardrobe with the linocut illustrations.
  • Come on in to Narnia; just push through the fur coats...
  • A 20-something Katie is waiting in Narnia to greet you!
  • Entering the cupboard gingerly...
  • The glorious Aslan, melting the eternal snow, can be seen through the gap in the fur coats.
  • Katie welcoming her friend Dan to come on in to Narnia!
  • Some friends explore Mr. Tumnus' house on the wall...
  • I painted the entire boiler room walls with a scene of Narnia in snow, and then thawed.
  • A view of the back wall with Mr. Tumnus' house, the Beaver house, the lampost and Mr. Tumnus guiding the way.
  • Katie with the lifesize White Witch puppet and further detail of the mural.
  • Katie welcoming some friends, Ralph and Helen into the space (this shows the ambience of the space as it was.)
  • Turkish delight with treats and tricks inside (just like Edmund was tricked...)
